Anika from the Applied Geology Section will receive a PhD scholarship from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) with effect from 1 August 2026. Her doctoral research project is entitled ‘Energy Underground – Life Cycle Assessment of Caverns for the Storage of Heat and Hydrogen’. The project explores an issue at the interface between the energy transition, geology and sustainable infrastructure development.
Through this fellowship, the DBU supports research projects that make a significant contribution to environmental and sustainability issues. In the current selection process, 107 applications were received and a total of 26 PhD fellowships were awarded.
Last week, Anika took part in the DBU’s induction seminar in Osnabrück. The programme included a city tour, a guided tour of the DBU site, an introduction to the DBU, and presentations of the PhD topics by the new scholarship holders. There was also a formal scholarship award ceremony and a dinner for all attendees. In addition to the official programme, the seminar offered numerous opportunities for stimulating discussions and making new contacts.
