Although Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) is not yet a member of EUTOPIA – a network of 10 European universities that promote integrated education and research to address global challenges – the university demonstrated its commitment to transnational cooperation by hosting Dr Muhammad Usman at the 2nd EUTOPIA Groundwater Workshop and Conference 2025.
The event, which took place from 12 to 14 March at the Technical University of Dresden, brought together experts to improve groundwater management using innovative web-based tools such as the INOWAS platform. Representing MLU’s Geoecology Department, Dr Muhammad Usman brought his expertise in hydrogeological modelling and the role of big spatial data for climate adaptation to the practical sessions on Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and the policy discussions on assessing the societal impact of groundwater solutions.
The workshop was jointly organised by TU Dresden and Vrije Universiteit Brussel with EU and German research funding, awarded EUTOPIA micro-certificates and facilitated critical knowledge exchange. “This collaboration combines state-of-the-art methods and processes with real water problems,” said Dr Muhammad Usman, emphasising the value of such partnerships for MLU’s environmental research.
