One approach is agroforestry: trees are specifically integrated into agricultural areas and combined with arable crops. This can help to protect soils, store water better and make agricultural systems more resilient to the consequences of climate change – such as heat, dry periods or heavy rainfall.
On 18 March 2026, the DiP-SMART Agroforst and DiP-FaiReSyst projects organised an agroforestry field day together with the AFaktive and Agroflow agroforestry projects of the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management, MODEMA of the German Association for Agroforestry and the German Association for Landscape Management. In addition to the many ecological benefits, the main focus was on the question of how value can be created from agroforestry in order to ensure the income security of agricultural businesses.
Together, we discussed the question of how such systems can be implemented in practice and what potential they offer for sustainable agriculture and new plant-based value chains – particularly in the context of structural change in southern Saxony-Anhalt.
We would like to thank all guests, the participating projects and the DiP coordination centre for the successful event and look forward to future collaboration!
