New publication on urban heat patterns in Hessian municipalities

Post: News / Publication : New publication on urban heat patterns in Hessian municipalities

Dennis Sakretz has published a paper on urban heat patterns in Hessian municipalities. Based on long-term Landsat time series, the study shows how meteorological conditions shape the spatial patterns of thermal stress.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the first paper by our PhD student Dennis Sakretz, Weather Patterns Modulate Urban Thermal Field Variance Index Variability: Evidence from Long-Term Landsat Time Series for Temperate Municipalities in Germany. The article, published in PFG Journal of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Science, was written in close collaboration with colleagues from the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) as part of the CoolTown project.

Based on Landsat time series from 1984 to 2024, the study shows how meteorological conditions shape the spatial patterns of the Urban Thermal Field Variance Index in municipalities of different sizes in Hesse. It thus emphasises the potential of remote sensing-based long-term data for a deeper understanding of urban climatic stress patterns and for a more informed assessment of thermal stress in the planning context.
