We are pleased to announce that a new study on corrosion mechanisms of potential container materials has been published by Panjiyar, L., Ende, M., Stephan-Scherb, C.:
For safe, deep geological disposal of highly radioactive waste, geo-technical barriers (containers+buffers) are needed to safely contain the waste. In the published paper, the interaction between metal (copper and cast iron) and bentonite buffer (swelling clay) in repository-relevant conditions is investigated, focussing in particular on the hydrogeochemical boundary conditions. The study shows that the corrosion behaviour of both copper and cast iron differs depending on the electrolyte composition.
