In the week from 19 February to 21 February 2025, scientists from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Julius Maximilian University Würzburg met for a productive research retreat in the picturesque Allgäu region. The focus was on the forward-looking topics of Big Earth Data and remote sensing, with a particular focus on the PhenoSAR and AgriSens DEMMIN 4.0 projects as well as the involvement in eo2cube.
During the meeting, which lasted several days, intensive discussions were held on current and future cooperation projects. The researchers exchanged views on the latest developments in remote sensing, particularly in the field of analysing large amounts of data from satellite and aerial images.
One focus was on the PhenoSAR project, which deals with the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to monitor changes in vegetation. The AgriSens DEMMIN 4.0 project, which is developing remote sensing technologies for digitalisation in crop production, was also discussed.
Particular attention was paid to the eo2cube initiative, which is creating an innovative data analysis infrastructure. The researchers discussed how this cloud-based platform for storing, processing and visualising satellite image data can support the work in both projects.
The scientists worked together on manuscripts for future publications and planned further research collaborations. Among other things, the retreat provided an opportunity to identify synergies between the ongoing projects. For example, they discussed how the cloud environment developed in AgriSens DEMMIN 4.0 and the SAR-based approaches from PhenoSAR can be further utilised.
The productive and inspiring atmosphere of the retreat further strengthened the collaboration between the two universities. We look forward to further cooperation in the field of Big Geodata.
