Excursion to the Morsleben Repository

Post: Excursion/Field Exercise : Excursion to the Morsleben Repository

By Prof. Dr. Christiane Stephan-Scherb

On 18 November 2025, the students of the module Advanced Exercise in Applied and Environmental Mineralogy from the Master’s program Applied Geosciences at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg visited the repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in Morsleben. The excursion was supervised by Prof. Dr. Christiane Stephan-Scherb and PD Dr. Ralf Halama. Its purpose was to deepen the course content on the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste.

Following an introductory presentation by the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (BGE), the second part of the excursion focused on the underground tour. The participants were driven through the mine workings and visited central facilities, such as the underground construction materials laboratory. The excursion concluded with a shared lunch.

For all participants, the excursion was a valuable addition to the course, offering vivid insights into the geoscientific and political challenges involved in constructing and operating a repository for radioactive waste.
