As part of the ‘Applied and Technical Mineralogy II’ module, we visited the company ‘Refratechnik Cement GmbH’ with students from the ‘Applied Geosciences’ Master’s programme. The company manufactures shaped and unshaped refractory materials at its Göttingen site and other locations. Following a guided tour of the production facilities – from raw materials to the finished product – we visited the research and development department. Finally, we discussed the requirements and properties of refractory materials.
Beyond deepening our specialist knowledge, the industrial visit demonstrated the wide range of ways in which the methods and techniques of applied mineralogy taught on the course are utilised in industrial processes. For all participants, this excursion was a wonderful opportunity to experience the link between theory and practice through key products such as refractory materials. Many thanks to “Refratechnik Cement GmbH” for these insights and their hospitality!
