Martin Luther University has a long-standing tradition of research cooperation with the Central Asian region (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan). This is reflected in institutional links to the region that have grown over many years, university and faculty agreements, joint research projects and the lively exchange of students and academics. This gives us, MLU, a unique selling point in the German higher education landscape.
In order to further strengthen MLU’s visibility in the Central Asian region and to provide even more efficient and sustainable local support for our cooperation activities, a foreign representative office was established in the Kazakh metropolis of Almaty in 2019. Located on the northern edge of the Tian Shan Mountains, Kazakhstan’s largest city with its numerous universities and research institutes is considered the centre of science in the Central Asia region.
The overarching aim of the representative office is to highlight MLU more strongly as a higher education policy player in line with its internationalisation strategy and to increase the attractiveness of Halle as a research location in a national and international context. With this commitment, Martin Luther University is endeavouring to establish itself as an outstanding institution and important point of contact for university and research cooperation with Central Asia.
A central task of the MLU Representative Office is the management of the affiliated Central Asia Sustainable Innovation Bureau (CASIB), which is funded by the BMBF and has the task of strengthening research cooperation between Germany and Central Asia (including Mongolia) in the region. In a joint declaration issued by the Federal Government this year, the work of CASIB in Almaty in the field of research networking and information exchange is welcomed.

Um die Sichtbarkeit der MLU in der Region Zentralasien weiter zu stärken und unserer Kooperationsaktivitäten noch effizienter und nachhaltiger vor Ort unterstützen zu können, wurde im Jahr 2019 eine Auslandsrepräsentanz in der kasachischen Metropole Almaty gegründet. Die am Nordrand des Tian-Shan-Gebirges liegende größte Stadt Kasachstan gilt mit ihren zahlreichen Universitäten und Forschungsinstituten als Zentrum der Wissenschaft in der Region Zentralasien.
Übergeordnetes Ziel der Repräsentanz ist die MLU entsprechend ihrer Internationalisierungsstrategie stärker als hochschulpolitischen Akteur hervorzuheben und die Attraktivität des Forschungsstandortes Halle im nationalen und internationalen Kontext zu steigern. Mit dem Engagement ist die Martin-Luther-Universität bestrebt sich als herausragende Institution und bedeutenden Ansprechpartner der Hochschul- und Forschungskooperation mit Zentralasien zu etablieren.
Eine zentrale Aufgabe der MLU-Repräsentanz besteht in der Leitung des angegliederten Central Asia Sustainable Innovation Bureau (CASIB), welches durch das BMFTR gefördert wird und die Aufgabe hat, die Forschungszusammenarbeit zwischen Deutschland und Zentralasien (einschließlich der Mongolei) in der Region zu stärken. In einer gemeinsamen Erklärung der Bundesregierung dieses Jahres wird die Arbeit von CASIB in Almaty im Bereich der Forschungsvernetzung und des Informationsaustausches begrüßt.
