Department Geography Education

Overview: Department Geography Education

Geography Education is the science of teaching and learning geography. It is dedicated to questions of geographical education and its design as well as the professionalisation of future teachers for the subject of geography. Geographical teaching and learning is closely linked to spatial human-environment relationships and the global challenges of the 21st century. The central tasks of geography didactics include the critically-reflected selection, structuring and justification of geographical topics as well as the present and future-relevant, target group-specific and effective design of geographical learning processes. An essential element of this is a close connection between theory and practice.

Research focuses on the professionalisation of (future) geography teachers, education for sustainable development and the relationship to geography, human-environment relationships, excursion didactics and the design of geographical education processes. The lesson plans, seminar projects, excursion contributions and final theses developed in the professorship bring together theory, empiricism and practice in the sense of research-based learning.
