Henning Frančik is a geographer, environmental scientist and artist specialising in critical environmental geography and ecological design as well as sound art and experimental film.
As part of the CryoCultures project, his research focuses on mapping the artificial cold and developing a digital atlas of the global cryosphere. Before joining CryoCultures, Henning was co-director of an artistic research lab at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design that combined ecological knowledge, critical visualisation and artistic practice. Since 2019, he has been working as a freelance artist in the fields of sound, experimental imaging/video art and material culture.
Henning Frančik has a hybrid academic background. He studied geography and environmental sciences at ETH Zurich, the University of Marburg and the University of Freiburg as well as media arts and media dramaturgy at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and the University of Cambridge, UK.
