In the Hikurangi subduction zone (northeastern New Zealand), the Pacific Plate is subducted obliquely beneath the Australian Plate, with the sheared sediments of the Pacific Plate forming a broad accretionary wedge against the Australian Plate. During IODP Expedition 375, sediments from a major splay fault were cored and characterized using measurements of anisotropic magnetic susceptibility (AMS). To better contextualize these results, we are measuring the textures of the minerals in the samples and using them to model the AMS and compare it with the measured results. This contributes to a better understanding of the AMS signal in sediments as well as the tectonics in accretionary prisms. The project is a collaboration with Dr. Annika Greve of Utrecht University.
