Working title of the doctoral project:
“The influence of explanatory videos on the process of explaining in student teachers using the example of geoscientific terrain methods”
For prospective teachers, explanatory videos on geoscientific field methods can potentially serve as a successful model for explaining these methods. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use and possible influence of such explanatory videos on the process of explaining to student teachers.
To answer this question, a study was carried out in the summer semester of 2019 with 30 student teachers of geography, whereby the test subjects were each given the task of preparing themselves with the explanatory videos on two terrain methods in order to then carry them out and explain them to a fictitious group of grade 9 students. The activities and statements of the test subjects were videotaped both during the preparation with the explanatory videos and during the implementation and explanation of the field methods. In an accompanying interview and in an interview a few weeks later, the test subjects were asked to reflect on their performance, the benefits and the role of the respective video for this learning and explanation process.
The videographies and their transcripts were analysed using Kuckartz’s content-structuring content analysis.
Further explanatory videos and materials on terrain methods can be found in the outdoor education database.
