Shelf sedimentation at the northern Gondwana margin is characterised by different-scale sequences that reflect the development of the palaeogeographic situation in relation to climate and tectonics. The Variscan orogeny played a decisive role in the multiphase movement and emplacement of the blankets in the course of gneiss formation. The structural imprint is expressed in folds of several generations and complicated fault patterns. The metamorphic overprinting in the ceilings varies. Today’s appearance is also complemented by the development of the Gulf of Lion in the Tertiary.
