ECU-MAES (ECU-MAES)

Project: Ecu-MAES completed ·

Ecuador has a high biodiversity and many endemic species. However, over the past 30 years, Ecuador has experienced significant deforestation and habitat loss, resulting in a continuous decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Currently, there are only sporadic empirical studies on biodiversity conservation, which provide only isolated insights into the ongoing losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Ecuador.

The project objective was to map and assess the capacities of ecosystems to provide regulating, provisioning, and cultural ecosystem services under changing climate and land-use conditions. The study was intended to initiate more in-depth research and cooperation with Ecuadorian research institutes.

The cooperation partner was the Universidad Regional Amazónica (IKIAM). The project was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
