INLAND (INLAND)

Project: INLAND completed ·

Overall objective of the project:
To date, policy instruments have inadequately addressed the development of peri-urban landscapes (PULs), resulting in informal settlements and the degradation of natural ecosystems. Ultimately, PULs lose their capacity to contribute to the protection of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services (ES). Many regions in Central and Eastern European countries are affected by strong, unsustainable urbanisation.

INLAND aims to (i) strengthen the research and innovation systems in Central and Eastern European countries, (ii) link science with political and other societal actors and (iii) promote their integration into European research programmes so that they can exploit and expand their research and innovation potential. Together with the participants and as a basis for a joint project proposal, INLAND addresses the following questions:

  • How should PULs be defined and delineated?
  • Who are the planning actors and stakeholders in PULs and how can they be reached and involved?
  • What planning approaches are there for the sustainable development of PULs?
  • What types of socio-cultural factors influence the success or failure of PUL planning approaches?
