Minimally invasive micro-energy piles: A modular approach with dual thermal and mechanical functionality (MIMEP)

The aim of the MIMEP project is the scientifically sound, practice-oriented development and investigation of two novel types of minimally invasive micro-energy piles.

The research project addresses key challenges of the energy transition in the construction and energy sectors through the development of innovative, minimally invasive micro-energy piles with combined structural and thermal functions. The aim is to utilise the subsoil both as a heat source and as a seasonal heat store, whilst at the same time making use of the load-bearing function of foundation piles.

Within the project, two novel types of pile are being systematically developed through scientific simulations and laboratory experiments. To this end, coupled thermo-mechanical models (FEM/CFD) are combined with laboratory and field tests in order to comprehensively analyse and specifically optimise their behaviour. In addition, suitable manufacturing and installation methods, as well as integration into energy supply systems – particularly in combination with heat pumps – are being investigated.

Particular emphasis is placed on validation through demonstrator plants, the analysis of long-term behaviour, and the assessment of economic and environmental potential. Overall, the project makes a substantial contribution to the decarbonisation of the heating sector, the efficient use of renewable energies and the development of multifunctional, resource-efficient foundation systems.
