The fluvial to marine transition zone (FMTZ) is that area in the coastal tract of rivers, both in deltas and estuaries, where the interaction between fluvial and marine processes takes place. The interaction of these processes generates a wide and complex range of physical and chemical dynamics, which lead to the deposition of large volumes of sediments (mainly sand and mud) and high amounts of organic matter Fluvial-marine transitional systems and their resulting sedimentary rocks are particularly complex and difficult to decipher for geoscientists. The present project wants to help filling this gap providing a comprehensive investigation of the fluvial-marine rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Agrio Formation in the Neuquen Basin of Argentina.
