Our article ‘Approaches to innovative solutions for cavern storage in the INTERSTORES project’ has been published in the latest issue of EAA INTEC Magazine. In it,we explain how water-filled caverns in solid rock can store large amounts of heat seasonally. The article provides an insight into the Horizon Europe project INTERSTORES, which, with 14 partners from nine countries, aims to make seasonal heat storage more economical and environmentally friendly. The focus is on the Giga-CTES in Vantaa, near Helsinki, which is set to become the world’s largest cavern storage facility by 2030. With a volume of over one million cubic metres, temperatures of up to 140 °C and a capacity of around 90 GWh, it is setting new standards. The article shows how the accompanying research is helping to ensure that the facility can later serve as a blueprint for similar storage systems.
