Tides are a key driver for a range of Earth system processes, including primary production and large scale ocean circulation. But how have tides and tidal energetics changed on geological time scales, and how do we validate the results? Here, I will use a series of case studies to show that deep-time tidal simulations are reasonably accurate and that tidally driven mixing needs to be explicitly included in deep-time earth system models.
