The 3-zone autoclave from Parr enables synthesis in two differently sized steel bombs. The reactors have a capacity of 71 ml and 252 ml respectively. The maximum pressure that both vessels can build up at 350 °C is 585 bar. Syntheses are also possible up to 600 °C. The upper pressure limit for both systems is then 392 bar, and the temperature required for the synthesis is provided by a tube furnace from Thermacraft. In the large steel reactor, it is possible to generate a temperature gradient in the reaction chamber using the furnace's three-zone heating system. Each of the three heating zones can be controlled individually via an external controller (see illustration)
In the existing version, the setup allows simple hydrothermal syntheses and can also be used for sophisticated single crystal growth / material synthesis using the 3-zone heating. Suitable sample geometry can also be used to investigate the influence of temperature gradients on material properties.
